Capsules or Powder for Your First Supplement Product

Most first-time brand owners choose a format because of how it will look on the shelf. Then the quote arrives and the plan changes.

Capsules or powder is the first real decision in a supplement project, and it is not mainly a product decision. It is a cash decision. Here is what actually separates the two, written for someone launching in the Nordics, Germany, the Netherlands, France or the UK.

The minimum order is what really decides it

Everything else is detail. The minimums are not close.

  • Capsules: 50,000 capsules. That is the capsule count, not the bottle count.
  • Powders: 1,000 units, finished and labelled.

Powder at 1,000 units is a real market test. Capsules at 50,000 is a commitment. So if you do not yet know whether people will buy your product twice, powder gets you in front of customers for a fraction of the stock. If you already know it sells, capsules bring your cost per unit down.

When capsules are the right call

Capsules work when the daily dose is small enough to fit into one or two of them.

  • Dosing is exact, so your label claim is easy to hold.
  • No taste problem. Bitter, fishy or chalky actives disappear inside the shell.
  • Customers understand them. No scoop, no shaker, no measuring.
  • We run HPMC vegetable capsules on an automatic line rated at 30,000 capsules an hour, so throughput is never the constraint. Your minimum is.

Where capsules stop working is serving size. Once a formula needs more than roughly a gram of actives a day, you are asking someone to swallow four capsules every morning, and most people quietly stop. That is the point to switch.

Our capsule manufacturing page has the sizes and fill details.

When powder is the right call

Powder wins on two things: big servings and small budgets.

  • Big doses. Collagen, creatine, protein blends, greens and electrolytes do not fit sensibly into capsules.
  • Low entry. 1,000 units is a test you can afford to get wrong.
  • Packaging choice. We fill into PET jars in white or black, sachets and doypacks. Stick packs run through a partner line.

The trade-off is that taste now matters. A powder someone dislikes becomes a one-time order. A capsule they never taste does not have that problem. Our powder filling page covers the jar and sachet options.

The timeline is the same either way

Lead time is 6 to 9 weeks for both formats, counted from approved artwork and raw materials in stock. It does not start when you email us. It starts when the artwork is signed off and the material is physically in the building.

That second half catches people out. If you are sourcing your own actives and they are eight weeks away, your launch is eight weeks away, whichever format you picked.

What is included, and what is not

Included with both formats: encapsulation or filling, blending, standard jars, caps, induction seals and desiccants, label application, batch documentation and quality release.

Not included: raw materials unless you ask us to source them, freight, and regulatory filing or country notification in your market.

Two things worth saying plainly. We do not design labels, we do not print them and we do not give design advice — you supply them finished on rolls (76 mm cores, outside-right-front wind, 2 mm spacing, around 1,000 per roll) and we apply them. And we do not make tablets, liquids or sprays, and we do not develop formulas from scratch. Better to know that now than in week six.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start with powder and move to capsules later?

Yes, and it is the sensible order when you are unsure. Prove the demand at 1,000 powder units, then commit to 50,000 capsules once you know your reorder rate.

How many bottles is 50,000 capsules?

Divide by the count per bottle. At 60 per bottle that is roughly 830 bottles, at 90 per bottle about 555, at 120 per bottle about 415.

Do I need my own formula?

You need a formula, yes. We do not develop one from scratch. We encapsulate or fill what you bring, and we can source the raw materials if you ask us to.

Where is it made?

In our own 500 m² facility in southern Spain, opened in 2026. Production rooms are held at 32 to 35% relative humidity, which is what keeps hygroscopic powders behaving in the jar. We have been GMP certified since 2025 and maintain it by annual audit, and we are ISO certified, RGSAA registered and hold EORI and REACH credentials.

Where to start

Tell us the format, the serving size and the quantity you have in mind, and we will tell you whether it runs here and what the realistic timeline looks like. If it does not run here, we will say so rather than waste your month.

Our minimum order and pricing page puts the numbers in one place, and the contact form reaches info@vitafilling.com directly. If the rest of the project is still open, how to start a supplement brand in Europe walks through the steps in order.
